Camp Follower

The term camp follower can be applied to a wide range of women who accompanied the armies. They could range from the legal wives of soldiers and officers, through sutleresses
(female sellers of provisions and goods), to the more dubious ‘leaguer ladies’ who sold “affection” and were sometimes expelled from the armies. In practice it is doubtful how many wives actually accompanied their spouses in the hardships and hazards of campaign life.
