A fully equipped ‘harquebusier’ (cavalry soldier) armed with sword, carbine (harquebus) and
a pair of pistols, wearing a buff (thick leather) coat and a ‘pot’ helmet. The only equipment this soldier lacks in the illustration are back and breast plates of armour. On the outbreak of the civil war there was a large variation in the dress and equipment used by individual cavalrymen, by the end of the wars the horse on both sides were almost identical
in appearance and only distinguishable by the colour of their soldiers coats, sashes or armbands.

This picture shows both Royalist (Red sashes) and Parliamentarian (Orange sashes) cavalry soldiers engaged in hand to hand combat.
